Forcing discard in response to Miracle trigger

Asked by meecht 9 years ago

I'm pretty sure this is correct, but I want to verify.

I was in an EDH game where a guy cast Mystical Tutor before his turn to put Temporal Mastery on top of his library.

On his turn, he draws Temporal Mastery and announces the Miracle trigger. In response to the trigger I cast Wheel and Deal to force him and my other opponents to discard their hands and draw 7 cards.

This counters the Miracle trigger, correct? I only ask because the guys reaction was basically "I don't understand, but whatever," and it's been bothering me.

It doesn't truly technically "counter" the trigger, but nothing will happen when it resolves. The object the effect is talking about is gone (it changed zones, from your opponent's hand to his graveyard), so the effect can't do anything with it.

It is. The triggered ability linked to the static ability uses the stack like all other triggered abilities. When it resolves, it allows them to cast the spell right then. Since the spell is no longer in their hand, nothing will happen.

It doesn't -counter- the trigger (since counter has a specific meaning in Magic) but it will cause them to not get to cast Temporal Mastery

Please remember that you would not have had priority to play Wheel and Deal when he drew, he would have been able to play Temporal Mastery before you could make him discard.

Incorrect, jonhydude. Miracle is a triggered ability that uses the stack, therefore it can be responded to.

In Magic, "draw" has a specific meaning, which is to take a card from the top of your library and put it into your hand. Miracle's wording indicates the card is in your hand when it triggers, it just needs to be revealed in order to announce the trigger.
