Fires of Invention/Maelstrom Wanderer

Asked by Eliiiiiiiiiiiiiiza 4 years ago

I think I know how the interaction between Fires of Invention and Maelstrom Wanderer works (Maelstrom Wanderer will be the first spell, whatever gets cascaded into is the second spell, and the second Cascade stays in exile) but I'm more curious as to how this affects commander tax. Does casting your commander without paying it's Mana cost bypass commander tax?

No, you still have to pay the commander tax. A card's "mana cost" is specifically the mana symbols printed in the upper-right corner. When an effect tells you to cast a spell "without paying its mana cost", that's the only part of the cost it covers. You still have to pay any applicable additional costs in order to cast the spell.
