Fiend Hunter interaction

Asked by phepa 5 years ago

Lets say i have Temur Sabertooth on battlefield and i cast Fiend Hunter from hand to exile some enemy creature. So the the ETB effect of Fiend Hunter is on stack, then i activate Temur Sabertooth targeting my Fiend Hunter.

  1. Temur Sabertooth activated ability is gonna resolve and Fiend Hunter will be returned to my hand and his LTB effect will go on stack.
  2. Fiend Hunter LTB effect resolve, but it has no exiled card to return yet, so the effect will fizzle away.
  3. Fiend Hunter ETB effect resolve and targeted creature will be exiled forever.

Am i correct with this, or i am missing something ?

Thank you very much :-)

You are correct in this. It's a commonly used trick with cards like Oblivion Ring where the "return the exiled thing" clause is a separate trigger from the "exile the thing" clause.

This same trick won't work with Banisher Priest (the "fixed" Fiend Hunter) or Banishing Light (the "fixed" Oblivion Ring) due to the way the "exile it" and "return it" effects are worded.

Temur Sabertooth does not target, which creature to return, and whether to return it, is determined on resolution. Other than that you are correct.
