Ferocious and the declare attackers step

Asked by Fizzz 9 years ago

Hello,

Which of the next statements is correct?

  1. I control a Goblin Rabblemaster , an Heir of the Wilds and 2 goblin tokens. I declare them all as attackers. I stack the Heir's trigger first and then the Rabblemaster's trigger seccond. The goblin gets +2/+0, Ferocious trigger resolves and it gets +1/+1 as I control a creature with power 4 or greater.

  2. Ferocious checks that I do not control a creature with power 4 or greater, then the trigger of the rabblemaster goes onto the stack.

Thanks!

No, it won't trigger at all.

The triggered ability on Heir of the Wilds has an "intervening 'if" clause" in it, which means that it will check both when it triggers and when it resolves. You won't have a creature with 4 power when Heir of the Wilds is declared as an attacker, so his ability won't trigger at all.

If you place Goblin Rabblemaster 's trigger above Heir of the Wilds ' on the stack, then the situation will play out as in your first scenario.

1- All your creatures attack, and Goblin Rabblemaster and Heir of the Wilds trigger.

2- You place Heir of the Wilds ' trigger on the stack, then Goblin Rabblemaster 's trigger on top of it (you get to choose the order they trigger in because you control both of them).

3- Goblin Rabblemaster 's trigger resolves, and he gets +2/+0, becoming a 4/2.

4- Heir of the Wilds ' trigger resolves, and checks that you have a creature of power 4 or greater. It sees Goblin Rabblemaster , so Heir of the Wilds will get +1/+1.

Number 2 is the right answer. Because Heir of the Wilds 's triggered ability is written with an "intervening 'if' clause", it checks the condition twice: at the time it would trigger and at the time it would start resolving. If the condition isn't true at the time it would trigger then it doesn't trigger at all.

Oops. I read ferocious wrong. Heir of the Wilds will NOT get a bonus, for the reasons that have been stated alreay.
