Favored Hoplite Heroic trigger and damage

Asked by Argy 9 years ago

I cast a Titan's Strength on my Favored Hoplite.

My opponent plays Wild Slash targeting the Hoplite.

Does the Hoplite die, or does Heroic trigger and stop damage being dealt to him?

The opponent has no other creatures on the field.

Thanks for any answers.

It depends when your opponent casts the spell. By default, you cast the Strength, then Heroic goes on the stack because you targetted the Hoplite. If your opponent responds to the Heroic trigger, your Hoplite will die before the ability that would prevent damage resolves, and Titan's Strength will be countered by the game rules. If your opponent for whatever reason waits until the Heroic trigger resolved and then responds with the Slash, then the damage will be prevented.

Heroic is a triggered ability and as such must go on the stack and can be responded to. When you cast Titan's Strength targeting the Favored Hoplite heroic triggers and goes on the stack above it. Your opponent can then respond to the heroic trigger and can deal the damage before the damage prevention effect is active.

Thanks for that.

Both answers were very clear and helpful.
