Experiment Kraj and Pentavus Interaction?

Asked by Servo 9 years ago

Ok, so I'm playing my Daxos of Meletis EDH and I take Experiment Kraj off the top by paying six, then my opponent plays Pentavus . Experiment kraj has all activated abilities, so can I pay 1 colorless to remove a counter from pentavus to make pentavites? Or since removing counters is part of the cost, am I not allowed to remove counters from a creature I neither own nor control?

If an ability refers to the card its on by name, it's just shorthand for "this card." When Pentavus says "Remove a +1/+1 counter from Pentavus" it means "Remove a +1/+1 counter from this card." When Experiment Kraj gains this ability, what he gains in essence reads "Remove a +1/+1 counter from Experiment Kraj."

No, you cannot pay with resources you do not have. Whenever the text of a card refers to itself by name, it really means "this particular object". Your Experiment Kraj won't have an activated ability that reads: "(1), remove a counter from Pentavus:", instead it will read: "(1), remove a counter from Experiment Kraj:". The effect (get a 1/1 pentavite token) will remain the same though.
