Epic Experiment, X-spells, and cost reducers

Asked by Phaetion 8 years ago

Let's say I cast an Epic Experiment for 5, and I have Arcane Melee in play. I hit a Comet Storm off the experiment. Normally, X would be 0, but if I have a cost reducer like melee out, am I able to use the 2 from melee to "pay" for X? Or will X be 0 no matter what?

No.

Comet Storm's X value is part of its mana cost; it is not an additional cost.

Because Epic Experiment instructs you to cast the cards without paying their mana costs, you can't pay the cards' mana costs or alternate costs (you can only pay the mana cost or one alternate cost, and "without paying its mana cost" is an alternate cost). Additionally, you can't pay partial costs, so even if Epic Experiment did give you the option to pay the cards' mana costs, you would need to pay the full mana costs.

Now, you could choose to multikick Comet Storm, and Arcane Melee would reduce the additional cost of kicking the spell, but you wouldn't be dealing any damage to any of the targets.
