Entreat the Angels

I've always been fuzzy on the double casting costs. How exactly does this work for Entreat the Angels?

You declare a value for X as one of the first choices during the casting process. When you pay costs, you pay X twice, plus .

Think of it like this: Every item in a card's mana cost effectively has a "+" between it and the next item. ++++.

Remember that if X appears in multiple places on a card, it always means the same number. To give you an idea:

  • you can cast the spell for (i.e. , for a total of 5 mana) to cast the spell for X=1, getting one token.
  • you can cast the spell for (i.e. , for a total of 7 mana) to cast the spell for X=2, getting two tokens.
  • you can cast the spell for (i.e. , for a total of 9 mana) to cast the spell for X=3, getting three tokens.

And so on.

You can view a spell that costs, say, like Disintegrate as if it had a baseline cost of , and allowed you to do its effect (one damage to the target) once for every time you pay in addition to that.

For a spell like Entreat the Angels, you can consider its baseline cost as , and you get to do its effect (get one angel) once for every (instead of like for Disintegrate) that you pay in addition to it.

We can go further. Astral Cornucopia would have a baseline cost of , and you get to do the relevant effect (put a charge counter on cornucopia) for each that you pay in addition to it, and so on.
