Endless persist ability?

Asked by Spook9MM 4 years ago

If I have both a Cauldron of Souls and Melira, Sylvok Outcast in play, does that mean I can effectively keep giving my creatures persist everytime they get sacced or die? Or does Melira's ability keep them from returning to play since they can't get the -1/-1 counter?

Melira's ability doesn't stop the entire persist ability, just the part that adds a -1/-1 counter. The creatures with persist will still return to the battlefield.

It's not clear from your question, but just to make sure you're aware: If you activate Cauldron of Souls to give the creatures you control persist until end of turn, if they die and come back then they won't have persist anymore until you activate the Cauldron again.

This is because when an object changes zones, the game treats it as a totally new object with no relation to what it was before (minus a few exceptions needed to make certain things work properly). The game sees the creatures that come back to the battlefield from the graveyard as different creatures from the ones that had persist and died. They won't still have persist when they return.

Right. No I knew I had to repeat the whole Cauldron bit again. Just wanted to be sure they came back w/o the counter. Hence, endless persist option. Thanks Rhad!
