Enchantments on dying players

Asked by CuteSnail 7 years ago

Say I'm playing a multiplayer game. I have an opponent enchanted with Curse of Thirst. At their upkeep they die, due to the triggered ability. Where do the curses go? Are they exiled, or do they go to my grave to be used again with Mistveil Plains and/or Vessel of Endless Rest?

The Curse is no longer attached to a legal object, so it goes to its owner's graveyard. It does not leave the game with the player/get exiled because you still control the Curse while it is on the battlefield.

According to a friend of mine, they should go to the grave since the person who controls the curses still exists in the game, but the curses are no longer enchanting your opponent since they (the opponent) no longer exist.

The above answers are correct, and the reason is that the multiplayer rules only deal with things that are owned or controlled by a player leaving the game. A curse, unless cast by that player onto themselves, is not subject to those rules, so after the aforementioned procedures are handled, the next time a player would get priority, SBAs are checked which see an Aura attached to an illegal object, which causes it to be put into it's owner's graveyard.

If the opponent owned the curse, it leaves with them, if it entered the battlefield under their control (perhaps they Eternal Dominioned it onto themselves), it gets exiled. If you're running some weird Zedruu the Greathearted deck where you cast curses on someone then give them control of the curse, the control changing effect ends, so you control the curse that's no longer attached to a player and it's put into your grave. As everyone else already said, under normal circumstances it goes to your grave.
