Emrakul, the Aeons Torn vs Sudden Spoiling

Asked by EddCrawley 9 years ago

So, I am looking for sideboard cards for an control deck, and thought about using Sudden Spoiling when my opponent wants to go to combat, then using something like Drown in Sorrow to wipe his board.

So I know that it will kill the Spaghetti Monster, but as it hits the GY as a 0/2 with no abilities, will his Re-shuffle ability trigger when he becomes all Spagettified again at the end of turn?

Not, Drown in Sorrow in his turn, obviously. Say Doom Blade instead.

The shuffle ability on Emrakul and friends isn't a normal "dies" trigger. It's a "to graveyard from anywhere" trigger, which triggers from the graveyard and uses information about the card as it exists in the graveyard. Removing the ability while the creature is on the battlefield won't stop it from happening. Yixlid Jailer is the only card that can remove the ability at a time it would matter. Otherwise you'll need to respond with Tormod's Crypt, Relic of Progenitus, etc.

I just realized there's something else in your question that I missed.

Emrakul will be back to its normal self the moment it hits the graveyard. It won't still be a 0/2 with no abilities. When a card changes zones it becomes a new object with no relation to what it was before (minus a few exceptions that don't apply here). The Emrakul in the graveyard is a different object from the Emrakul on the battlefield that got Suddenly Spoiled.

You could always Unmake it or use Leyline of the Void.

You cannot use Unmake on Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.

Ah you mean after being Spoil'd. Carry on. :)

Remember this example involves Sudden Spoiling, but in normal circumstances, yeah that doesn't work.

The protection from colored spells part only applies when he is a creature so you could Stifle/Trickbind/Voidslime his shuffle ability

All those ideas are nice but they are still Colored Spells. it doesn't have protection from abilities from what I see, So something like Banisher Priest or Brain Maggot would work better. Not only are you using a creature's "Ability" instead of a spell, you are also avoiding his graveyard trigger by exiling it instead.

It specifically says it cannot be countered. Those cards don't work. The only thing that removes Emrakul is Oblivion Ring effects.

The ability itself is protected from colored spells and as colored spells they would have no effect.

His protection ability is only when he is a creature "6/15/2010 "Protection from colored spells" means that Emrakul can't be the target of colored spells (including colored Aura spells) or of abilities whose sources are colored spells (such as the "when you cast" ability of an Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre that's been turned red by Painter's Servant). It also means that all damage that would be dealt to Emrakul by colored spells is prevented. Like every protection ability, it works only while Emrakul is on the battlefield.

Yes, however he "can't be countered" period. So, I'm not sure what you would be countering. When he is on the stack, he can't be countered, period. His protection doesn't exist until he is on the battlefield, and he can't be countered and thus prevented from entering said battlefield.

You're talking about the shuffle ability...sorry dude. Reading comprehension is apparently not my skill on this thread. :)

If you want to counter him the only way is Time Stop cause it does not "counter" it just removes it from the stack
