Eidolon of Countless Battles

Asked by marcus1679 7 years ago

Hypothetically, I have a Hopeful Eidolon in play, then cast Eidolon of Countless Battles for its bestow cost and enchant Hopeful Eidolon with it. Let's say I also have 6 other cards in play that qualify as creatures or auras. What is the total power and toughness of my Hopeful Eidolon with the Eidolon of Countless Battles attached?

By my count it would get +8/+8 because Hopeful Eidolon counts for 1 counter and the Eidolon of Countless Battles also counts for 1 counter. With those 2 counters plus the 6 other creatures/auras would give a total +8/+8.

@Mattie3Thumbs: Note that this situation does not involve counters. A +1/+1 buff is not the same as a +1/+1 counter.

The main reason I asked was because of the wording on Eidolon of Countless Battles. It has it "...and enchanted creature each get...", while other creatures with bestow say "...or enchanted creature...".

Most creatures with bestow (e.g., Boon Satyr) say "Enchanted creature gets ___." Note that creatures with bestow that convey a static buff, such as +2/+2, typically confer a buff equal to their own power and toughness.

Eidolon of Countless Battles and Nighthowler are formatted differently because they both have scaling P/T values. Rather than write one characteristic-defining ability or one instance of a scaling static ability for the creature and one more for the enchanted creature, the wording is combined. This has no functional effect on the way the cards operate.

Abilities that are worded "~ or enchanted creature" are typically triggered abilities, in which case only one of those objects needs to do something to trigger the ability. Take, for example, Spiteful Returned. Its ability says "or" because only the enchanted creature or only Spiteful Returned will be attacking. Auras don't attack, so having the phrase "whenever ~ and enchanted creature attack" would result in an ability that doesn't trigger.

tl;dr: The abilities are functionally identical to those on other creatures with bestow, even though they're formatted a little differently.
