Duration of Replacement Effects

Asked by BlueScope 8 years ago

Say my opponent controls Tainted Remedy, and I cast Solemn Offering, targetting it - will I gain or lose life?

I'd say I'd gain life, as the object creating the continuous effect has been destroyed prior to the life gain. That would mean if the card said "You gain 4 life. Destroy target artifact or enchantment", I'd lose 4 life, then destroy the Remedy.

Would it make any difference at all if it said "Destroy target artifact or enchantment, and you gain 4 life."? I know some cards are phrased that way, I just don't know why there's a difference.

A card's instructions are always carried out in the written order. You do the first effect first and the second effect (if there is one) second.

Because Solemn Offering instructs you to destroy a target enchantment before it instructs you to gain life, you'll be able to gain life without Tainted Remedy's replacement effect kicking in.
