Doubling season tokens?

Asked by exemplarydust 7 years ago

I've seen several videos where people say that [doubling season] causes planeswalkers to enter the battlefield with double the amount of loyalty counters. But why? The first ability (If an effect would put one or more tokens onto the battlefield put twice that many instead.) And the second ability essentially causes you double the loyalty counters put onto a planeswalker if you activate the loyalty ability? Right? So how do walkers enter the battlefield with double the loyalty counters? Or do they even?tl;dr: how does [doubling season] affect walkers upon entering the battlefield?

Remember to link all cards in your question with double brackets

Doubling Season
Liliana, the Last Hope (for an example of a walker)

Whenever a permanent enters the battlefield with some kind of counter on it, the counters are being places on it and will be affected by relevant replacement effects. For example, an Apocalypse Hydra would enter with double the +1/+1 counters with a Primal Vigor on the field.

Since Doubling Season affects all counters, including loyalty counters, planeswalkers will enter the battlefield with twice as many as printed on the card if Doubling Season is on the field.

Doubling Season will double the initial amount of loyalty counters on a planeswalker. However, it will not double the amount of loyalty counters added by +1 because this is a cost, not an effect like entering the battlefield.

Say I cast Jace, the Mind Sculptor with Doubling Season on the battlefield. He will enter with six loyalty counters on him. However, if you use his +2 it will only bring his loyalty up to 8 rather than 10.

Hope it helped. :D

Not quite right lucal13. Using a + loyalty ability is putting loyalty counters on the walker so Doubling Season will affect them. It won't, however, affect - loyalty abilities.

606.4. The cost to activate a loyalty ability of a permanent is to put on or remove from that permanent a certain number of loyalty counters, as shown by the loyalty symbol in the abilitys cost.

@ acbooster

Thanks for correcting me! I didn't realize that, but I guess that does make sense now that I think about it.

acbooster,

Incorrect. Refer to the Gatherer Page for Doubling Season:

10/1/2005 Planeswalkers will enter the battlefield with double the normal amount of loyalty counters. However, if you activate an ability whose cost has you put loyalty counters on a planeswalker, the number you put on isnt doubled. This is because those counters are put on as a cost, not as an effect.

A prime example here is Gideon, Champion of Justice. Using his +1 will only add 1 loyalty counter as it is a cost, not an effect putting said counter on it.

However, his +1 ability's effect puts counters on him as well. These are doubled because the effect is putting them on, not the cost.
