Does Wayfaring Temple with Invocation of St. Traft really give you two flying angels?

Asked by SpaceGaudetCAD 6 years ago

Hi there,Correct me if I am wrong: I've played Wayfaring Temple and cast the enchantment Invocation of Saint Traft on him. I attack with Wayfaring Temple.

Upon attacking, I also create a 4/4 white angel with flying that is attacking and tapped (curteousy of Invocation of Traft).

Now, if Wayfaring Temple survives and does combat damage to the opponent player, during the combat damage step it will create a copy of the 4/4 flying angel token.

Now a question:1) What abilities has the copy token angel (created by Wayfaring Temple) inherited from the original token? Or is it just a 4/4 flying angel, untapped with summoning sickness?

It's the ending phase and the 4/4 token created by Invocation of St. Taft is exiled, but the token copy created by Wayfaring Temple is not exiled and remains on the board.

Now the fun question:2) If I were to instant cast Psychotic Fury (double strike) onto Wayfaring Temple before attacking, since there would be two separate attack/combat damage steps, would I be able to copy the 4/4 flying angel (attacking and tapped) twice permitting everything surives their attacks?3) With double strike, would two copies of 4/4 flying tokens be created by Invocation of St Traft because: 'whenever this creature attacks' happens twice?

For question 1 you seem to understand the rules well enough. Populate creates a copy of the token's copiable attributes, defined by the effects that created the initial token. It's a 4/4 white Angel token with flying. The effect of Invocation of Saint Traft only exiles the token it created, not the one created by the populate effect.

For your second question, you don't seem to understand what double strike does. When combat involves a creature with first strike or double strike another combat damage step is created, but that's the only additional step, no additional declare attackers step. As such, when Wayfaring Temple attacks you will only create one 4/4 white Angel token with flying. If it is unblocked it will deal combat damage to your opponent twice, each time you'll be able to populate to create a new token.

A couple things to note in the second scenario: Because Psychotic Fury is an instant you can wait until after blockers are declared before you decide whether or not to give double strike, so that you'll know if you'll be getting through and not waste the effect. Secondly, because of the populate trigger during the first strike combat damage step, Wayfaring Temple will have increased damage for the regular combat damage step, although if any of your opponent's creatures have first strike you could also lose creatures lowering the power of Wayfaring Temple before the regular combat damage is dealt.
