Does waxmane Baku give himself a ki counter?

I was playing a kitchen table draft with a friend and he claimed that (Waxmane Baku) came in with a ki counter which was triggered from the card itself, can someone please clarify

Your friend is incorrect. Waxmane Baku triggers when a spell is cast; by the time the Baku is on the battlefield, it has already been cast and resolve. Since its ability only triggers while the Baku is on the battlefield, it is too late to trigger for itself.
