Does Warstorm Surge look at Ogre Battledriver's pump?

Asked by CoryDean 8 years ago

Warstorm Surge and Ogre Battledriver are on the field. If I play a 0/1 Saproling, what happens?

Now what if it is Warstorm Surge and Spear of Heliod are out? What does the Saproling do?

Warstorm Surge and Ogre Battledriver's abilities both trigger at the same time, so you can decide in what order they resolve. Knowing that, we can proceed.

Warstorm Surge checks the power of the creature upon the resolution of its triggered ability, so if you had Ogre Battledriver's triggered ability resolve before the Surge's, the Saproling will get +2/+0. Then Surge will resolve, having the creature deal a total of 2 damage to a creature or player.

With Spear of Heliod, its ability is a static effect that is simply true, meaning the instant a creature shows up on your battlefield (whether from the stack or animating something), it will immediately get the +1/+1. Knowing this, the Saproling will enter as a 1/2 (0/1 with +1/+1). And Warstorm Surge will trigger. If you have the Ogre also, apply the above paragraph here, and the Surge will resolve, having the Saproling deal a total of 3 damage to something or someone. If the Ogre is not in play, it will be 1 damage instead.

Note: Warstorm Surge is not the thing dealing damage, the creature is, so if the creature has deathtouch or infect or lifelink, that will apply.

Thank you so much. That last detail was a helpful tidbit I hadn't thought of, too.

Indeed. That's why it's such a potent combo with Blightsteel Colossus. If he hits the battlefield, it's an automatic 11 infect damage to a player before he even attacks.

That's inspiring.
