Does Vesuva work on Legendary Lands?

Asked by Aethaleon 9 years ago

Question is self explanatory, but an example would be: can I play Vesuva and have it copy Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx?

Yes, you can do this. However, one of the Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx would have to be sacrificed, as it is a legendary permanent.

@GlistenerAgent: That's somewhat inaccurate.

Vesuva's ability allows it to copy any land on the battlefield. No exceptions. You can choose to copy a legendary land with it.

If you control both the original legendary land and a Vesuva copy of that land, then you'll have to put one of them into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action (this is the "legend rule" -- you can only control one of each legendary permanent at a time). Because this is a state-based action, you can't activate any mana abilities in response to it.

Also note that the legend rule doesn't cause sacrifices. Sacrificing something is a very specific action in Magic. The legend rule just causes you to put the extra permanents into their owner's graveyard.
