Does Vertigo Spawn affect creatures that have been stolen and then returned to you?

Asked by Rackham9 5 years ago

I played a match where my creature switched controllers for a single turn and was then used to attack me. If I block that creature with Vertigo Spawn does it remained tapped even when it returns to my control?

Yes. It skips being untapped one time on an untap step.

For clarity, is your answer based on any specific rule or wording? And keep in mind that the controller has now changed.

It's because of the way the card's text is written. "Its controller" refers to whoever its controller happens to be, not necessarily the specific player controlling it right now. Some of the cards with an effect like this include a Rulings Note on their Gatherer entry that clarifies how it works. See the Gatherer entries for Barl's Cage, Elvish Hunter, and Frost Titan for examples. Unfortunately Vertigo Spawn is one of the cards lacking this note, but the ruling still applies.

I was just using my general rules knowledge, as Rhadamanthus says there are many similarly worded cards that have rulings on them that explain how the abilities do not track the controller. I am trying to find the comprehensive rule that those rulings are derived from, but am having trouble. I will update if I find anything in my next 15-20 minutes of searching through the comp rules.

Also, sorry about the delay. I somehow missed the notification.

They are correct. It will not untapped during your uptap step. Changing control of a creature has no effect on it, except for who now controls it. All other aspects are kept the same. So when you gained control over it, it was tapped, and effected by an ability that will prevent it from tapping during its controller's(your) next untapped step.

The ability is worded like that to prevent it from untapping only during its controllers next untap step. Other abilities can still untapped it, such as Seedborn Muse.

Rackham9: Correct answers to this question have been up for a while. I chose one to mark as the "Accepted Answer" so that the thread can move out of the Unanswered queue. Please remember to take care of this yourself in the future.

Usually I avoid selecting my own response when I have to do this but in this case I felt it was the one that best answered the original question. If you prefer one of the other responses, feel free to re-select the answer.
