Does this gives me infinite combat phases?

Asked by Bordin 4 years ago

Let´s say I have Helm of the Host equipped to Aurelia, the Warleader , on the first combat phase the equip gives me an aurelia´s token, which I choose not to attack, on the second combat (from Aurelia´s trigger, which I attack with the token) does the equip gives me another token? that I can use to attack later and so on

No, even though the ability would be activated every combat phase Aurelia, the Warleader is defined as that one name. So, even though you have... say 3 of Aurelia, the Warleader her ability would only be allowed to activate once every turn, no matter how many copies you had of her. Because of the fact that her name applies to all of her copies.

I'm very sure Helm of the Host + Aurelia, the Warleader works and is an infinite combat combo. Even if you never attack with the original Aurelia; you'll get an extra token with each combat step.

You attack with the first token in the first combat step, then the helm will make a second token at the second combat step, where that one gives you a third combat, and so on

That's what makes Godo, Bandit Warlord so strong, he can search for Helm of the Host and win on the spot

Yes, I think this would work.

Helm triggers on each of your combats, creating a new token each time.

I also believe that any time a card's name appears in its text box, you can replace it with 'this permanent' (or creature/spell/card/whatever, depending on context). This would make the tokens each read "Whenever this creature attacks for the first time each turn ..." and allow for each to create one additional combat step.

Okay, thanks for that. MTG's rules on that are pretty undefined.

Yeah! It's also definitely one that could go either way at first blush. Happy gaming!

201.4. Text that refers to the object it’s on by name means just that particular object and not any other objects with that name, regardless of any name changes caused by game effects.

Seems pretty defined to me.

They all have the same name, so only the FIRST attacking Aurelia each turn grants an additional combat phase.

AndyM: That's incorrect. Just as Shivan Dragon does not buff all creatures named Shivan Dragon, and only itself, Aurelia's use of name only refers to that particular object, not any other objects with that name.

Again,

201.4. interesting. I stand corrected. Now if I could only delete my earlier post to avoid any confusion in this thread...
