Does the copy cast after ciphering Hidden Strings trigger heroic?

Asked by ojmandias 9 years ago

Lets say I have a Favored Hoplite on the field. If I attack with it, and it goes through, then I play Hidden Strings. I untap the Favored Hoplite and then untap a land. Then I encode Hidden Strings onto the Favored Hoplite that I targeted beforehand, does heroic trigger twice in that instance? Also, next turn, can I trigger heroic with the copy of Hidden Strings that is created by Cipher?

To answer you first question: I'm pretty sure it doesn't. For your second question: yes you can.

Even though its a copy? That's broken.

It is a copy, but it says that you cast the copy, so you're casting a spell. (note that many copy effects, like Twincast, don't cast the copy and instead just create it on the stack, so it wouldn't trigger heroic again).

Regardless, please remember to select an answer to remove this question from the unanswered questions queue.

Just to clarify, cipher itself doesn't target anything. You choose a creature to encode the spell onto, but that doesn't target the creature because it doesn't use the word target. And even if it did, heroic can only trigger once per spell. A single spell can't trigger heroic multiple times on a single permanent.

It's a really good combo

I ran a heroic hidden strings deck it works like this.

Main Phase: Cast Hidden Strings target your Phalanx Leader and a blocker, or two blockers or your manna sources you just tapped or whatever.

Cipher, (which does not target creature but puts the spell into the creature's DNA) onto Fabled Hero which should already have Aqueous Form or Stratus Walk something for evasion.

Combat Phase, fabled hero goes first and gets damage in, activating cipher, allowing you to cast Hidden Strings to target two permanents and tap/untap them. Use one to target Fabled Hero pumping him up before the next round of damage, and the other for you Phalanx Leader or opponents blocker, or mana for a Triton Tactics or something like that.

then the rest of combat happens, which after that damage resolves you can cast Hidden Strings for a third time on your turn to tap/untap as you want. Such as untapping your guys who attacked or your mana or whatever.

I was really sad to see it rotate out of standard, combo'd with Triton Tactics and also Retraction Helix man it was fun.

Tapping a blocker doesn't do anything.

Before combat? like on your main phase you can tap one of their untapped creatures to make it open for you to hit them?
