Does Sharuum the Hegemon + Phyrexian Metamorph copying it, with Blasting Station results in an infinite combo?

Asked by Sh0wnW4V3 8 years ago

How I think it works:

1- I copy Sharuum the Hegemon with Phyrexian Metamorph. The Legend Rule is applied, then I choose one to go to the graveyard.

2- I target the one in the graveyard with the Return to the Battlefield trigger, creating the famous loop.

3- Can I respond to the trigger by sacrificing the creature? If yes, when it returns to the battlefield, will it untap the Blasting Station allowing me to keep the combo?

No. The legend rule applies as a statebased effect. Which are checked when someone gains priority. Comes into play effects are put on the stack before statebased actions are checked. Targets are chosen when the ability is put on the stack. So the meatmorph is not in the graveyard yet.

Also, the legend rule does not trigger, it just happens putting one of the legends into the graveyard. There is no time where any player can respond.

But considering that I can sac the metamorph to an Krark-Clan Ironworks to create an infinite mana combo, shouldn't I be able to do the same here? Or is it a different case?

And to create the infinite loop the metamorph needs to trigger, and it will be when the active player receive priority right? The sac with Blasting Station would be in response to that trigger I think. I'm basing my answer considering the combo with Ashnod's Altar that I asked here: Q&A

@pskinn01: That's incorrect.

State-based actions are processed before triggered abilities are put onto the stack.

116.5. Each time a player would get priority, the game first performs all applicable state-based actions as a single event (see rule 704, "State-Based Actions"), then repeats this process until no state-based actions are performed. Then triggered abilities are put on the stack (see rule 603, "Handling Triggered Abilities"). These steps repeat in order until no further state-based actions are performed and no abilities trigger. Then the player who would have received priority does so.

The combo works as described. The legend rule will apply, causing you to send one creature to its owner's graveyard. You'll then handle the ETB ability, and the recently-deceased creature will be a legal target at that time.

To answer the last part of your question, we'll use abbreviations. Let S1 be the actual Sharuum the Hegemon and S2 be Phyrexian Metamorph.

S1 on field.
S2 enters.
S1 sent to yard for legend rule.
S2 ability targets S1.
In response to S2 ability, sac S2.
S2 ability resolves, S1 returns.
S1 ability targets S2.
S1 ability resolves, S2 returns.

Note that you can't sacrifice Sharuum the Hegemon before Phyrexian Metamorph enters the battlefield or you'll break the combo because Phyrexian Metamorph won't be able to copy Sharuum the Hegemon if the latter isn't on the field.

And Blasting Station's ability triggers whenever a creature enters the battlefield. It'll untap for any S1 or S2 return.

Thank you Epochalyptik, I'm always getting confused with combos that involve a State-Based Action. This combo will be a great add to my Sharuum's EDH.

Thanks Epochalyptik. It was explained wrong to me, by a judge at a FNM so I took his word for it.
