Does Redirect Save Illusions?

Asked by EverythingIsK 9 years ago

Lets say I have Phantasmal Bear out and my opponent plays a Boomerang on it. Normally it would be a kill spell for illusions, but then say I play Redirect and I target one of their lands. Does the bear stay?

I have a feeling no because of the way the stack works.

No. The ability triggers and goes into the stack above the spell. Countering or changing the spell doesn't alter the fact that the ability has triggered and is now waiting to resolve. You have to counter or exile the ability.

Your feeling is right. Phantasmal Bear's ability triggers when it becomes the target of a spell and changing the target of that spell with Redirect, etc. won't change the fact that it triggered. Eventually the trigger will resolve and the Bear will be sacrificed.

Are there any cards that can remove the ability trigger from the stack then? I've already tried on gatherer and couldn't find anything other than Stifle, But that isn't modern legal (the format I'm playing in).

Voidslime, Trickbind. They're really not worth running just to save an Illusion, though.

Searching for the words "counter" and "trigger" together in Rules Text gives Trickbind and Voidslime as Modern-legal options. Spending deck slots to do this isn't worth it, because it's likely the triggering spell/ability is something that will deal with the illusion once it resolves anyway.

If you're relying on illusions, play Lord of the Unreal and Phantasmal Image to copy the Lord.

That's my usual combo I try to have in opening hand, but I was hoping to have something to save them with when I don't have the lords out.
