Does Pyromancer's Goggles and Brain in a Jar work together?

Asked by htffan951852 7 years ago

I don't think it works this way, but I have to ask, if I have Pyromancer's Goggles out in play as well as Brain in a Jar and I tap Pyromancer's Goggles and get one R mana. If I use that one R mana to use Brain in a Jar's effect, to cheat in a Red Instant or sorcery, would I get a copy of that spell?

Pyromancer's Goggles is worded as "When that mana is spent to cast a red instant or sorcery spell," but it doesn't say that, that mana needs to be spent on that Instant or sorcery. So would using that mana on Brain in a Jar which in turn casts a Red instant and sorcery, would that get me a copy?

From Gatherer:

The mana produced by Pyromancers Goggles can be spent on anything, not just a red instant or sorcery spell.

Any red instant or sorcery spell you spend the mana on will be copied, not just one that requires targets.

My guess is that the mana you are spending counts as being spent for an ability of Jar, not for the card it is casting, so you will not get a copy.

GearNoir is correct. You would be spending the mana from Pyromancer's Goggles on the activated ability of Brain in a Jar. The fact that the ability then casts a spell is irrelevant as far as the Goggles are concerned.

That is what I thought, but it would have been nice if that is how it worked. Thanks guys.

The way you could make it work though is with something like Surge or Madness, say Avacyn's Judgment off of a Tormenting Voice activated by use of the Brain in a Jar. It nets you an extra mana, and actuvates the Madness clause in Avacyn's Judgment.
