Does Proliferate makes counters stay if I use it on a counter that has the "until end of turn" text?

Asked by Lycasde 4 years ago

Let's say I tap Heart of Yavimaya for a +1/+1 counter on one of my creatures then I cast Contentious Plan . Does the proliferated +1/+1 counter stay on the creature or does it leave with the +1/+1 counter that was originally placed?

Heart of Yavimaya does not give +1/+1 counters. It has an activated ability that produces a continuous effect that lasts until end of turn (giving a target creature +1/+1 until end of turn). Because of that, there is no +1/+1 counter to proliferate in your scenario.

Comprehensive Rules:

Continuous Effect:

611.1. A continuous effect modifies characteristics of objects, modifies control of objects, or affects players or the rules of the game, for a fixed or indefinite period.

+1/+1 Counters:

122.1. A counter is a marker placed on an object or player that modifies its characteristics and/or interacts with a rule, ability, or effect. Counters are not objects and have no characteristics. Notably, a counter is not a token, and a token is not a counter. Counters with the same name or description are interchangeable.

I'm sorry If it was, unclear let's change the scenario: Let's say I tap Heart of Yavimaya so that I can give a creature a +1/+1 counter until end of turn and then I cast Contentious Plan to give my creature another +1/+1 counter so that makes it have 2 +1/+1 counters. My question is that will the proliferated counter stay or will it go away with the +1/+1 counter given by the Heart of Yavimaya ?

The detail you were missing in your initial question is that effects only give counters if it says "+1/+1 counter" (or some other value/type of counter). There are also effects that don't place counters on a thing, but do give them a temporary (or sometimes permanent) stat boost. This is where Heart of Yavimaya falls.

For an example that places counters rather than granting temporary boosts, look at the activated ability on Bow of Nylea . It specifically says to put a +1/+1 counter on target creature, while Heart of Yavimaya just says the creature gets +1/+1.
