Does Leyline of the Void override Emrakul, the Aeons Torn?

Asked by Pheardemons 8 years ago

If I have Leyline of the Void on the battlefield and I play Glimpse the Unthinkable which puts Emrakul, the Aeons Torn into their graveyard...is Emrakul, the Aeons Torn exiled or does he get shuffled back into their library with the rest of the graveyard? (which wouldn't be much if I already had Leyline of the Void on the battlefield).

Leyline of the Void says "instead". So does Emrakul, the Aeons Torn even get a trigger being that it was never placed into the graveyard?

Emrakul's ability triggers when Emrakul is put into a graveyard from anywhere. Leyline of the Void creates a replacement effect that prevents cards from being put into your opponent's graveyard, so Emrakul will never actually go to the graveyard. Therefore, its ability will never trigger and nothing will be shuffled.

Note:

Some cards say "when this card is put into a graveyard..." (Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, Guile)

The cards that say the above clause have triggered abilities that trigger upon hitting the graveyard. They would, however, be subject to Leyline of the Void's replacement effect, exiling them instead of ever letting them touch the graveyard.

Some cards say "If this card would be put into a graveyard..." (Legacy Weapon, Blightsteel Colossus, Progenitus)

The phrase "If this card would be put into a graveyard..." is also a replacement effect, in addition to Leyline of the Void's. The difference between the two clauses listed is important because if 2 replacement effects are trying to modify the same object, that object's controller chooses which one happens. So, the controller of Legacy Weapon could choose to have it shuffle back in the library for the replacement effect instead of it being exiled via Leyline of the Void.

616.1. If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected objects controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply...etc.
