Does gaining life with double strike and archangel of thune give counters for the second set of damage?

Asked by ThePwnageKitty 9 years ago

This is something i've been wondering about, i have Archangel of Thune and True Conviction in a deck full of token creatures. Thune states when i gain life i put counters on and since i have double strike i would gain life two separate times since im dealing damage two separate times with each of my creatures. When will the ability finally kick off putting counters on them? Is it before or after the second damage step from double strike?

So whenever you gain life Archangel of Thune puts a +1/+1 counter on each of your creatures. If all your creatures have double strike and lifelink, then Archangel of Thune will trigger once for each creature you control after first strike damage. And then again after regular combat damage. So each creature will grow once after first strike and then again after regular combat damage.

It happens twice and will happen after both damage steps.

A. First strike damage, you gain life equal to the power and toughness for each creature dealing damage this turn, the archangel's trigger goes on the stack for each instance of life gain or each creature with life link. they/it resolves, you put a counter on each creature you control for each time it resolves.

B. Regular damage step, The damage happens with the counters from the previous step, you gain that life, you do the same as above with the archangel counters.

ruling on multiple instances of lifegain and archangel
