Does Essence Scatter work on enchantment creatures being cast using their bestow costs?

Asked by kupalord 9 years ago

for example: my opponent casts Nyxborn Shieldmate to be bestowed on a Favored Hoplite it's being cast as an aura spell but since it is not yet on the battlefield, it still counts as a creature spell right? could i counter it with essence scatter?

No, you cannot. If a card is cast for its bestow cost, it is an enchantment spell, not a creature spell. From the moment you cast a spell for its bestow cost, it is an Aura enchantment and not a creature, right up until either the creature it is enchanting leaves the battlefield, or until it starts to resolve and its target is no longer legal (in which case it reverts to being a creature spell, but not with enough left to be countered).

Drilnoth I wanted to make a small correction although it might just be a typo on your part.
Bestow creatures are always enchantment spells no matter which cost was paid. Bestow creatures are either Enchantment Creature - [creature subtype] or Enchantment - Aura spells. Both Aura and [creature subtype] are subtypes of spells and when cast for bestow cost bestow spells loose the type Creature and this leads them to loose their [creature subtype] since only creature spells and tribal spells can have a [creature subtype]. They will also gain the subtype Aura which enables them to enchant a target.

Ah, yes. I meant Aura spell. Apologies for the shorthand.
