Does Defensive Formation stop trample damage?

I've researched the issue a bit but have not found a decisive answer because people seem to disagree.

If my opponent attacks with a 2/2 trampler and I block it with a 1/1, will Defensive Formation allow me to direct the remaining trample damage to the blocker sparing my life total or planeswalker?

Yes. That's a legal damage assignment, so there's nothing stopping you from making that decision since you're in charge of damage now.
