Does combat damage + lifelink trigger multiple instances of lifegain?

Asked by AwesomeOctopus 7 years ago

Say I have Karlov of the Ghost Council out, as well as Whip of Erebos and I attack with three creatures. combat damage is dealt simultaneously, so do I get 3 separate instances of lifegain and get 6 +1/+1 counters on karlov or only 2?

From Gatherer:

A creature with lifelink dealing combat damage is a single life-gaining event. For example, if two creatures you control with lifelink deal combat damage at the same time, the ability will trigger twice. However, if a single creature with lifelink deals combat damage to multiple creatures, players, and/or planeswalkers at the same time (perhaps because it has trample or was blocked by more than one creature), the ability will trigger only once.

Note that the ruling is slightly outdated. Life link no longer triggers, it's a static ability that just happens when damage is dealt.

Other than that, the ruling is correct.

I think the term, "the ability," refers to Karlov's trigger from a lifegain event.

Oh, is that a ruling from Karlov's page? If so, that makes more sense why it's written like that.
