Does changing the target of a spell change the source?

Asked by nickiru 9 years ago

If I Swerve a Lightning Bolt from me to Phyrexian Obliterator , does the source of the damage change to me; as the controller? Or is the spell that originally started the damage still make the opponant the source thus making phyx obliterator make the opponent sac permanents?

Swerve just changes the target of the spell; it doesn't change who controls the affected spell. Your opponent is still the controller of the Lightning Bolt . In the above situation, your opponent will have to sacrifice 3 permanents per Phyrexian Obliterator 's triggered ability.

I should also add that a "source" in this context is an object that deals damage. A player is not a source, rather he is the controller of that source.

That makes logical sense and concluded my little debate with my game here; thanks.

But just for me, do you know of a specific rule that states this? I'm a rules kinda guy :D

Not sure exactly what rule you need exactly. Cards only do what's printed on them. If Swerve changed the controller of the spell, it would say so, like in Commandeer .

Hmmm, that works. When another card specifies something, whereas the first card doesn't, then the controller isn't changed or modified. Thanks.
