Does Call to the Grave or Obzedat, Ghost Council happen first?

Asked by StormSky92 9 years ago

I was playing with friends today and got in a situation that no one knew how to resolve. My opponent has Call to the Grave out and I have no creatures on the field. But I have Obzedat, Ghost Council in exile waiting to come back in at the beginning of my upkeep. But Call to the Grave also happens at my upkeep. Does Call to the Grave trigger first, so I don't have to sacrifice Obzedat, or does Obzedat return, then I have to sacrifice it?

At your upkeep, all abilities that trigger at upkeep (so, your opponent's Call to the Grave and your Ozzy) trigger and go on the stack. Since multiple people's abilities are going on the stack simultaneously, they happen in what's known as APNAP order, or "Active Player, Non-Active Player".

So, what will happen is: Ozzy's ability goes on the stack (because you're the active player; it's your turn, after all), then Call to the Grave 's ability goes on the stack. Since the Call's ability is the highest on the stack, it resolves first, you sacrifice if you can, then you move on to returning Ozzy.

tl;dr: Ozzy lives, because Call happens first.

Triggers on the stack are put in APNAP order - the active player, aka the palyer whose turn it is, puts the triggers on the stack first. That means they will resolve last. The first trigger to resolve will be call to the grave and it will do nothing. Then your Obzedat will return safely to the battlefield.
