Do I get to keep a token created by Seance if I have Kira, Great Glass Spinner on the board?

Asked by Eggsofwrath 7 years ago

Ok, so, say I have, for example, Snapcaster Mage in the graveyard, and Kira, Great Glass-Spinner and Seance on the battlefield. If, at the opponents upkeep, I exile Snapcaster Mage, put the token on the battlefield, and then wait till the end of turn, does Kira Counter Seance's exile ability? Since the ability IS from, and not part of the card, and seance exiles the card, and doesn't interact with the token until the end of turn, what is the outcome?

Kira, Great Glass-Spinner grants the ability "Whenever this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability the first time in a turn, counter that spell or ability." Seance targets a card in a graveyard, which does not have that ability, and then creates a token which will have that ability. That is the only time it targets, so it will never be countered by Kira. The end of turn delayed triggered ability never targets and simply exiles the token it created, you'd need to counter that ability by another means to keep the token.

There is no way to counter that ability. There is not a second separate ability to interact with. The same ability that returns the creature to the battlefield removes it from the battlefield later. I am not aware of any card that can prevent the exile of the token

A spell or ability only targets something if it specifically says so. Sometimes, the word "target" is packed into the full rules text of a keyword ability (like "Enchant" or "Equip"), but we don't have to worry about that here.

Seance's ability only has one target: a creature card in a graveyard. The last part of its effect is a delayed triggered ability that doesn't have any targets, so the ability granted by Kira, Great Glass-Spinner won't interfere with it. The token will get exiled in your example.

Tortlewar: anything that can counter a triggered ability can counter a delayed triggered ability. It is still a triggered ability. The reason Kira, Great Glass-Spinner doesn't effect this is because the delayed triggered ability doesn't target, not because DTAs are uncounterable.
