Do creatures in your graveyard count as "creatures you control"?

Asked by Darthagnon 8 years ago

The question says it all... By the way, what would Kolaghan Forerunners' power be when in the graveyard?

No, only creatures on the battlefield count for that.

KF's power is in constant flux, depending on the number of creatures on the battlefield. It is known as a characteristic-defining ability and works in every zone at all times (hand, field, library, exile, stack, command and graveyard).

Just to be perfectly clear - the only zones in which there is a notion of "controlling" something are the battlefield and the stack. Objects in any other zone have an owner, but not a controller.

Nobody controls the creatures in your graveyard, since there is no notion of control for objects in graveyard. Therefore, they are not counted towards Kolaghan Forerunners' power.

And, yes, as Boza said, their power will be equal to the number of creatures you control regardless of where they are, including the graveyard. That is true of all characteristic-defining ability, whether they set power/toughness (like in the Kolaghan Forerunners case), subtype (like Mistform Ultimus and all changelings) or color (Ghostfire is the only card with a characteristic-defining-ability that sets its color, as far as I know)
