Do clone cards copy counters on creatures?

Asked by Nuubi 5 years ago

For example if I used a clone card like Clone or Altered Ego on a creature such as Heroes' Bane that has been pumped, we’ll say it’s a 16/16. Does the clone copy the counters? Or just in general if I copy a creature with +1/1 counters does the copy receive those counters?

It will not copy the counters.

The copiable values of an object are its name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, power, toughness, and loyalty. These values are usually copied exactly as printed, though changes due to other copy effects, face-down status, and some effects that set a creature's power and toughness (such as "as (the object) enters the battlefield" or "as (the object) is turned face up") can be copied.

Counters and objects attached to an object are not copied.

That being said, Heroes' Bane does enter the battlefield with four +1/+ counters on it, so as long as the copy is entering the battlefield as a copy, it will gain those initial four counters. So Clone or Altered Ego will get those four counters (plus Altered Ego will get a number of additional counters based on what you set for X when casting it). Artisan of Forms , on the other hand, will not get Heroes' Bane 's initial four counters as it wouldn't be entering the battlefield as a copy, and would thus have P/T of 0/0.
