Discard without cards in hand for Reality Smasher?
Asked by masterpeez 4 years ago
If I have no cards in hand, but a removal spell, cast it targeting Reality Smasher , can I just discard zero or is the discard treated like an additional cost to the spell?

Reality Smasher has a triggered ability. When an opponent casts a spell targeting Reality Smasher the trigger goes on the stack above the spell. When the trigger resolves, the opponent can discard a card. If they don't the spell is countered.
You could very well target an opponent's Reality Smasher with a removal spell and no other cards in hand. If you don't somehow draw by the time the trigger resolves your removal will be countered because you didn't discard a card though.
