Dictate of Erebos???

Asked by Jay75 9 years ago

An opponent swings on me with a hexproof 13/13 unblockable infect creature and Dictate of Erebos is on the field under my control. Can I Go for the Throat one of my own creatures to prevent the damage?

If that's the only creature your opponent controls, yes. Dictate of Erebos doesn't target, so if your opponent has to sacrifice a creature and only has one, that one has to be sacrificed. It doesn't matter how your creature died. Dying for any reason will trigger Dictate's ability.

Just be sure you do this before the combat damage step begins (meaning you have to do it in either the beginning of combat step, the declare attackers step, or the declare blockers step, or somewhere in the turn before the combat phase).

So I can't do it before combat damage is assigned? Or does that step not occur since the creature is unblockable?

Assigning and dealing damage is the very first thing that happens during the combat damage step. That's why I said you have to do this before the step begins. The steps of the Combat phase are:

  • Beginning of Combat
  • Declare Attackers
  • Declare Blockers
  • Combat Damage
  • End of Combat

If there are any creatures in combat with First Strike or Double Strike, there will be 2 combat camage steps instead of 1.
