Devoid and Color Identity

Asked by Eliiiiiiiiiiiiiiza 3 years ago

I want to build an Eldrazi tribal EDH deck with Emrakul, the Promised End as the commander. Are the devoid Eldrazi from the Battle for Zendikar block allowed to be used in that deck since the devoid ability makes them colorless?

The color of a card is not the same as that card's color identity. A card's color is, usually, determined by the mana symbols in it's cost (notable exceptions are cards like Pact of Negation which state it's color in lieu of a color Mana costs).

On the otherhand, a card's color identity is determined by all mana symbols on a card and any abilities like those of Pact. That's way Tasigur, the Golden Fang is a commander, not just a one.

So to circle back to your question, the color identity of a devoid Eldrazi is not colorless. They still have colored mana symbols on them, so they can't be in a colorless deck.

Hope this helps!!

Just an addition to Tylord2894's explanation of color identity:

Color identity also includes any color indicators in the type line. An example would be Archangel Avacyn  Flip and it's flip Avacyn, the Purifier. Archangel Avacyn  Flip would have a color identity of white and red due to the red color indicator on the type line of Avacyn, the Purifier.

And mana symbols in reminder text (such as on Crypt Ghast's Extort ability) do not count.
