Deathtouch and trample

Asked by Ishmrakul 6 years ago

If I attack with a 5/5 with deathtouch and trample and it gets blocked by a 5/5, does my creature deal 1 damage to the blocker which kills it and 4 trample damage to the player, or does it do 5 damage to the blocker and 0 to the player and then trade?

Your choice! You are required to assign lethal damage to the creature, with any amount of damage from a creature with deathtouch being considered lethal for this purpose. You can choose to assign more if you want, and then any leftover damage (presumably 4, but potentially less) gets assigned to the defending player.

Neotrup is correct. the way trample works is the following:

  • attacking player (you) choose how to assign combat damage, so you choose to assign any number of damage to blockers, and if enough damage to kill all of the blockers is assigned, leftover damage CAN (but doesn't have to) be assigned to a defending player or planeswalker.
  • deathtouch only requires one point of damage to kill a creature, so you CAN choose to assign one damage to the blocker and the rest of the damage your creature will do to the defending player/planeswalker

So, in summary, your best plan of action is to assign 1 damage to the blocker and 4 damage to the defending player, and both creatures die once combat damage is assigned.
