Damage prevented with Dictate of Twin Gods in play?

Asked by Nephilim 8 years ago

If I cast Deflecting Palm while Dictate of the Twin Gods is in play, does the other player take double or quadruple the damage? I say x4 because first the damage is doubled, then prevented by palm. Then palm deals the damage and is doubled again. But my friend says that palm prevents the sage from being dealt so the first sources damage isn't doubled. Who is right?

The result of this interaction can actually be either x2 or x4, and in this case you're the one making the decision.

A prevention effect is essentially a special kind of replacement effect. If multiple prevention/replacement effects could modify how an event affects a player or object, then the affected player or controller of the affected object decides which one to apply first. In this case you decide whether to apply Deflecting Palm or Dictate of the Twin Gods first to the damage event affecting you.

  • If you apply Palm first, then there's no more damage on you that Dictate can apply to, and then Dictate will be applied to the new damage event created by Palm. You get x2 damage.
  • If you apply Dictate first, then there's still a damage event for Palm to apply to. It prevents the damage and creates a new event that Dictate can apply to. You get x4 damage.

It is 4x... or 2x, depending on how each of you chooses.

Lets go with an example. Your opponent is attacking you with 2/2 Runeclaw Bear. You decide to let it through and cast Deflecting Palm before damage. Now there are two replacement effects affecting the damage of the bear, so the receiver of the damage will choose which effect to apply/resolve first.

If you choose the order where the prevention applies first, only 2 damage is prevented by the Deflecting Palm. If he chooses to have the doubling effect apply first, and the prevention effect apply afterwards, 4 damage will be prevented.

In summary, you can have the damage prevented or doubled then prevented.

Next, depending on how you chose previously, Palm will deal either 4 (prevention first) or 8 damage (doubling first) to the opponent.
