damage during combat step?

Asked by skozzkozz 9 years ago

During the combat step say I attack with Kalonian Tusker and my opponent blocks with two creatures how is damage dealt? Do I select one creature to receive damage then if it was lethal the other creature receives the rest or do both both creatures take 3 damage at the same time.

The attacker assigns the damage after blockers have been declared. Then, you have to assign damage to the blockers. You are obliged to assign at least lethal damage to one creature, before you can assign any to the next one in line.

When multiple creatures block a single attacker, before anybody gets priority in the Declare Blockers step, the attacking player indicates the order in which the blocking creatures will be receiving damage (they are not dealt damage yet). From this point, the selected order of blockers is set and can't be changed. After that, players can cast spells and activate abilities. When all players pass, the game moves to the Combat Damage step and damage is assigned to the blockers in the order that was previously indicated, where the first creature must be assigned lethal damage before any damage can be assigned to the next one, and so on.

You choose what your creature deals damage to, and how much. In this case, you can split it 3 to one creature, none to the other or 2 to one, 1 to the other.

I'm pretty sure that's right anyway.

nayaftw is incorrect. The way Absinthman explained it is exactly correct.

After blockers are declared the attacking player sets a damage assignment order for any attacker being blocked by more than one blocker. After that each player gets priority in the declare blockers step. Then in the combat damage step every creature in the damage assignment order must be dealt lethal damage before you may assign any damage to the next creature in the damage assignment order. After this all of the damage is dealt at the same time.

The relevant rules are 509 and 510 and the specific sub-sections of the rules are:

509.2. Second, for each attacking creature thats become blocked, the active player announces that creatures damage assignment order, which consists of the creatures blocking it in an order of that players choice. (During the combat damage step, an attacking creature cant assign combat damage to a creature thats blocking it unless each creature ahead of that blocking creature in its order is assigned lethal damage.) This turn-based action doesnt use the stack.

510.1c A blocked creature assigns its combat damage to the creatures blocking it. If no creatures are currently blocking it (if, for example, they were destroyed or removed from combat), it assigns no combat damage. If exactly one creature is blocking it, it assigns all its combat damage to that creature. If two or more creatures are blocking it, it assigns its combat damage to those creatures according to the damage assignment order announced for it. This may allow the blocked creature to divide its combat damage. However, it can't assign combat damage to a creature thats blocking it unless, when combat damage assignments are complete, each creature that precedes that blocking creature in its order is assigned lethal damage. When checking for assigned lethal damage, take into account damage already marked on the creature and damage from other creatures thats being assigned during the same combat damage step, but not any abilities or effects that might change the amount of damage thats actually dealt. An amount of damage thats greater than a creatures lethal damage may be assigned to it.
