Countering tokens

When my Growing Ranks populates a token, can that token be countered by a creature counter card like Essence Scatter or Cancel

Short answer: no.

Long answer: Growing Ranks creating a token is not a spell, it is a triggered ability. Triggered abilities are abilities that happen at certain times or when certain conditions are met, and always include the words "When", "Whenever", or "At". Abilities cannot be countered by spells like Cancel , which say that they counter a spell.

There are three or so cards that can counter that ability, but they're worded "Counter target triggered ability", like Stifle .
