Countering spells from graveyard

Asked by Pskytzo 6 years ago

Is it possible to counter spells that originated from the graveyard.

Yes. Spells cast from the graveyard still use the stack like regular spells. Ones you can normally cast from the grave include aftermath cards or flashback cards. Often spell cast from grave (such as with the aforementioned abilities) will be exiled when countered instead of going to the grave (or another zone), but it can vary based on what allowed the spell to be cast. Note some activated and triggered abilities function from the grave, but are not cast so they cannot be countered with a spell like Cancel, but could be with a spell like Disallow. If countered, the cards that those abilities originated from will often stay in the graveyard. A notable exception is that both embalm and eternalize exile the cards as a cost and if the ability is countered the cards will remain exiled.

Do you mean they'll be exiled on resolution? What spells are there that become exiled when countered just because they were cast from a graveyard (and not because they were exiled as a result of Deny Existence or Abandoned Sarcophagus or something)?

@Yesterday: After casting a spell with Aftermath or Flashback from the graveyard, the spells basically gain "if this would leave the stack, exile it instead."

Oh, I thought they only became exiled if they resolved. I guess reading the card explains the card. MB.
