copying spells on the stack (as it resolves?)

Asked by LordArazeal 9 years ago

theres a bunch of confusing infinite mana combos out there. i put a bunch of the cheapest into an EDH deck.99 paths to infinite manatheres a couple combos in there that copy spells that are already on the stack, and possibly resolving. for instance the Early Harvest + Patron of the Moon + Uyo, Silent Prophet combo, or the Early Harvest + Mischievous Quanar .

as far as i can tell, with the latter combo, with 12 lands you cast Early Harvest , leaving you 9 mana free. before it resolves, you spend 3 more mana to copy it with Mischievous Quanar . now the stack consists of an EH, and a MQ targeting it. you let MQ resolve, giving a copy of EH. you let that copy resolve, untapping all your lands. then you PAUSE the stack resolving to facedown and faceup MQ again in order to copy the origional EH which is still on the stack. then you let that copy resolve, and so on.

does this pausing the stack to add to it work like this? I heard of these combos from reputable sources, so I am inclined to believe it works, i just want to be clear...

thanks!

Technically speaking, there's no such thing as pausing the stack. However, there is a round or priority between each resolution.

When players pass priority without adding to the stack, the topmost object on the stack resolves. Players must then pass priority again to resolve the next object. The stack does not resolve all at once.
