Convoke and X cmc cards

Hi there I was just wondering if i had a Chief Engineer out and wanted to cast Hangarback Walker could i use thopter tolkens to pump the Hangarback Walker so if i had out 10 thopter's can i tap them to give Hangarback 5 +1/+1 counters ?

When casting a spell with in it's mana cost you choose the value for X, then pay the cost. You can choose X=5, then pay the cost through whatever means you want, so with convoke you could tap any combination of 10 creatures and/or lands.
