Combo Blocking Trick with Deathtouch

Asked by Rilikb 6 years ago

Alright so I just ran across this and wonder how extensive this can get. Let's just say our opponent has 5 1/1 Servo Creature Tokens and he swings with all 5. I however have a Aether Poisoner on the field and Before I declare blocks (or after however I will need to do this) I play Saving Grace on my Aether Poisoner. Will all his servo creature tokens die along with my Aether Poisoner? or better yet lets make it 4 Ironclad Revolutionary would the Aether Poisoner still kill the 4 Ironclad Revolutionary's due to the deathtouch?

In the situation you describe, nothing will happen to the attacking creatures because Aether Poisoner isn't dealing any damage to any of them.

A card only does what it says, no more and no less, and Saving Grace only says its ability will redirect damage that would be dealt to you and your permanents to the enchanted creature instead. It doesn't say anything about making the enchanted creature block attacking creatures or otherwise get into combat in a special way.

You're still allowed to block with the Aether Poisoner in addition to using Saving Grace, but unless you use some other effect that will specifically allow it to block more than one attacking creature, you can only block one of them.

No they won't all die. Damage is being dealt to your creature. But your creature isn't dealing damage back. Unless you block one. But the just that one would die.

Ah, I read the card wrong in that case. Glad I cleared it up before I made a bad play. thanks Rhadamanthus! and Shane!

I thought of one more thing that might need clearing up in case it's still an open question: Even if you used something that could allow Aether Poisoner to block all the attacking creatures (there are a few cards that do this), it could still only kill one of those attackers. Having 1 power means you only have 1 damage total to assign among the creatures it's blocking, not 1 damage for each of those creatures. You'd have to do something else to increase the Poisoner's power in order to get more damage to throw around.
