Clarification on Sundering Titan land destruction?

Asked by docbp87 6 years ago

I am looking into mono-blue Tron, and most are running Sundering Titan as one of the bombs/finishers. My question is just specifically how it works when it comes in to play. I understand that you choose one land of each basic type. So if, as the blue-player, I am the only one with any lands with the type "Island" in the type-line, I lose an Island (which I guess is fine, assuming that I am getting more of their lands than my own)? So in the case of a matchup where I only have Islands, and my opponent has multiple other basic-types, but no Islands, I lose an Island, they lose one-each of the other 4 types? I assume I am over-complicating this, but want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.

Thanks!

Rulings on Sundering Titan relevant to this question:

If one of the basic land types isnt present, it isnt chosen. If the only land of a certain type is one you control, you must choose it. (2004-12-01)

If a land has more than one basic land type, it can be chosen more than once. (2004-12-01)

So yes, if you are the only player who controls an Island, you must choose it. Should your opponent control multiple lands with different basic land types, you can destroy one of each land type.
