Child of Alara LTB effect

Asked by mindfulvet 7 years ago

Need a clarification on a LTB effect. Scenario:

Child of Alara on the battlefield, controller casts a second Child of Alara. What happens? When does the controller decide to enforce the legendary rule? Does the 2nd Child of Alara survive or does the 1st Child of Alara destroy it when it goes to the graveyard? (Basically, is the 2nd Child of Alara still a spell when I destroy the 1st?)

The legend rule has a player controlling two or more legendary permanents with the same name put one in the graveyard as a state-based action. This happens whenever a player would gain priority, so in this case right after the second Child of Alara enters the battlefield. This will trigger whichever of those Childs is put in the graveyard, destroying the one left on the battlefield (and probably other permanents).

The controller also choose which one stays and which one goes away. The dies trigger will only happen if the one that goes away is put into the graveyard. There will be no trigger if it goes to exile (due to a Rest in Piece), the library (due to a Wheel of Sun and Moon), or the command zone (due to it being a commander and it's owner returning it there).

BlueScope - Thank you, that's what I thought, but was hoping for something else.

Neotrup - I get that part, I know I get to choose which when and where (if applicable) - Was more concerned with how they (or any legendaries for that matter) interact with each other once two are on the battlefield. (Wasn't sure when the check was made, during casting, or after) But BlueScope answered that for me. Thank you.
