Charging Rhino + Menace

Asked by chesspi 8 years ago

My question simply is this: If my opponent has a Charging Rhino on the battlefield and I take control of it with Lose Calm, can it still be blocked because Charging Rhino says "Charging Rhino can't be blocked by more than one creature." and Lose Calm says "Gain control of target creature until end of turn. Untap that creature. It gains haste and menace until end of turn. (A creature with menace can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)"?

It cannot be blocked. It requires criteria to be met to be blocked, and it is impossible to meet that criteria. As soon as you can block it with no more than one creature as well as two or more creatures you can block it, but that is not possible.

When determining legal permutations of blockers, you have to satisfy as many requirements as possible without violating any restrictions.

In this case, Charging Rhino has two contradictory restrictions: it can't be blocked by more than one creature and it also can't be blocked except by two or more creatures. As a result, it's impossible to block Charging Rhino without violating one of the restrictions, so you can't legally declare any blockers for Charging Rhino.
