Chain of Acid: Can the copy be copied?

Oloro_Magic says... #1

Technically yes you can copy a copy but it tends to be difficult to do. The best example would be the interaction with Isochron Scepter and Izzet Guildmage.

Let's say you have a Lightning Bolt imprinted on the Scepter, you can pay for the scepter thus copying the Bolt and then use Izzet Guildmage's 2U ability to copy the copy as it is still an instant. You could also use Reverberate for a similar effect.

However, with Chain of Acid I'm not sure you ever want to copy the spell, all it would do is speed up the process really as everything is still going to be gone.

Oloro_Magic I meant does the spell continue to self-replicate? Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, the spell will replicate until there are no valid targets.

There's the "may" clause however, so it will continue until there're no more targets or someone chooses to break the chain. "May" is a game saver in MtG, as it stops a lot of potential combos that would otherwise end the game in a draw.
